Most pipesmokers are familiar with the names Dunhill, Peterson, Savinelli, Stanwell and so on; pipes of good quality that you will find stocked by the specialist tobacconist. Some will even be familiar with names such as Bo Nordh, Anne Julie and the late, great Preben Holm; pipemakers who have made pipemaking into an art form with their often unique designs. Pipes made by artisans such as these command very high prices; an indication of the quality of wood used, the quality of the maker, the time taken to actually make the pipe and the fact that the completed pipe will be a “one-off” - never to be replicated.
Over the years, the Danes and Italians seem to have held sway when it comes to designs that depart from the more classical styles. However, there are a number of other pipemakers from around the world who are gradually gathering similar acclaim for their products. This page will feature the work of some of these artisans of pipemaking. |

Joel Shapiro (JS Pipes & Tampers)
Not many newcomers to pipesmoking will turn to making pipes as a means of learning more about the hobby. In March 2005, this was, however, the way Joel Shapiro decided to do it. Starting with some blocks donated by another maker, Joel bought some stems and set to. From humble beginnings and following advice from experts such as Mark Tinsky, Johann Slabbert, Stephen Downie, Greg Pease and Robert Vacher on the finer points of fit, finish and engineering, Joel is now producing unique designs such as those featured below. In the space of one year, Joel has been asked to make the 2006 Pipe of the Year for the Alt.Smokers.Pipes newsgroup — a fitting tribute to a talented and promising pipemaker. |
